Work-related Fatal Injuries in Great Britain
Nov 23 2022
In the last 5 years there have been 1128 fatalities recorded in the United Kingdom, according to the RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) records.
RIDDOR is a 2013 statutory instrument of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It regulates the statutory obligation to report deaths, injuries, diseases and "dangerous occurrences", including near misses, that take place at work or in connection with work.
RIDDOR fatalities are recorded by the Health & Safety Executive, a Local Authority or the Office of Rail and Road and involve either a “worker” or “member of public”.
The kind (or cause) of the accident and the industry sector in which it happened is also recorded.
At Stop'N'Go we use this data to measure the nature and scale of the safety problems we solve. By combining in-depth analysis of RIDDOR records with anecdotal conversations with our key customers and partners, we’re able to identify the areas we can best help our customer markets and ultimately reduce fatalities in and around the workplace.
We pay particular attention to the records made by the HSE as these relate directly to the workplace and are most relevant to our customers.
Over the last 5 years 1,128 fatalities have been recorded, 84 of these were recorded by the HSE. In 2021/22 below average figures of 203 total fatalities and 155 HSE fatalities were recorded.
One of the highest causes of these fatalities was recorded as “Struck by a Moving Vehicle”, in the last 5 years 16.5% of fatalities recorded were caused by a moving vehicle and in 2021/22 the figure was 17.4% (27 fatalities exactly).
In each of the last 5 years, “Struck by a Moving Vehicle” has been the second highest cause. It is also the cause that Safety professionals can do the least to prevent or mitigate. For instance, the highest cause in 2021/22 is “Fall from Height”, this risk can be mitigated by using better safety lanyards and anchoring systems.
